THE POSITION
The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Transportation Technician who will be responsible for carrying out a range of technical tasks related to the inspection of both materials and workmanship involved in transportation construction projects. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this role, you will play a crucial part in verifying the precision of all testing procedures in accordance with Pennsylvania Test Method (PTM) protocols, as well as relevant standards set forth by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), while also ensuring the reliability of laboratory reports.

You will be responsible for monitoring shipments to confirm that the quality of the delivered materials adheres to specified standards, ensuring that accurate weigh slips reflect the quantities shipped.

Your duties will include observing technicians at Portland cement plants, asphalt facilities, and aggregate quarries as they conduct tests and maintain quality control over the production of these materials.

You will assist in meticulously documenting sampling and testing methodologies, ensuring adherence to the designated procedures for each specific material type, while also identifying and promptly reporting any potential issues to your supervisor.

It will be essential for you to apply the appropriate testing methods and assess compliance with these methods by material suppliers, focusing on processes such as extraction, gradation, specific gravities, absorption, air content, slump tests, unit weights, and wash tests.

Additionally, you will ensure that vendors adhere to the required quality control plans, maintain comprehensive documentation in line with these plans, accurately prepare reports, collect samples, and contribute to quality assurance reviews at the district level.
Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employmentWork hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
    Vendor-controlled work hours.
    Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part time on an ad-hoc basis, at the supervisor's discretion. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville.Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.You will receive further communication regarding this position via email.     REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
    QUALIFICATIONS
    Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
    • One year of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or One year of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; orAn equivalent combination of experience and training.
