Description: The unit has a 50-mile radius rule. All candidates
must disclose any licensing hits at the time of submission. The
Intermediate Care Unit has 30 beds, including 14 private and 16
semi-private rooms. The goal nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4, but it
often runs at 1:5, and occasionally can reach 1:6. Charge nurses
take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts. They
also have a Clinical Assistant who works 2, 12-hour shifts on the
floor with a patient assignment and 2, 8-hour shifts in the office.
Typically, there are 2-3 Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) on the
unit, with ratios of 1:10 to 1:12. Weekend requirements state that
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are considered weekend shifts. Night
staff is required to work 4 weekend night shifts in a 4-week
schedule. Day shift staff works 4 weekend day shifts in a 4-week
schedule but usually do not work straight days. Straight day
workers must cover a minimum of 3 night shifts in a 4-week
schedule. Holiday coverage is needed, but holiday shifts are
usually filled by permanent staff. Registered Nurses wear navy blue
tops and bottoms, along with navy scrub jackets. Nurses have access
to telemetry technicians, but they must be able to read and
interpret their own telemetry strips. Registered Nurses must be
capable of titrating drips for medications such as Amiodarone,
Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, and Heparin, and
occasionally Lasix. All respiratory equipment is overseen by the
Respiratory Therapy (RT) team, which is available 24/7, along with
the pharmacy team. House supervision is provided by Hospitalists
and Intensivists who are in-house around the clock. An IV team is
also available 24/7 for IV starts and related needs. Staffing
includes self-scheduling, provided that unit needs are met. Staff
members are allowed 4 requested days off per month. All staff are
expected to float as necessary into rotations with potential ratios
up to 1:6, and occasionally 1:7 in different areas. The unit
generally serves patients with diagnoses such as chest pain, heart
failure, arrhythmias, and those post-procedures, among others. The
cancellation policy allows for 2 shifts per 13-week contract.
Charting is conducted through the designated electronic system. A
