Akron General's Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) is a 10-bed neuro specialty critical care unit that cares for stroke, neuro trauma, neuro interventional, neurosurgery and neurology patients. This patient population is critical, often requiring invasive ICP monitoring and aggressive nursing interventions. A caregiver in this position works 7:00 AM - 7:30 P M. A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide direct nursing care.
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a
given patient population.
- Assessments: complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in
patient condition and respond appropriately.
- Planning: develop and update goals, involve patients and
families in developing plans of care, coordinating the
interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
- Implementation: provide nursing care, administer treatments and
medication, and document.
- Evaluation: participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation
of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care
and participate in the quality improvement proces s.
- Leadership/professional development: delegate
tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor,
pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain
applicable c ertification/ licensure and o btain any required
certifications specific to the unit .
- Department specific duties: review and document progress and
discharge goals with patients and families, participate in and
document patient care, discharge planning and case management
conferences, communicate information regarding patient plan of
care, current outcomes and acuity at shift report, communicate
changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues, ensure
JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved,
incorporate patient safety goals and complete all paper and
electronic records. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future
caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American
Heart Association (AHA).
- Willing to obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and TNCC
certification and complete CVVHD training within one year of
employment. Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver
include:
- Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Our caregivers continue

- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
