"Verland's Vision is simple "To lead the way in transformative care, for those with complex needs, allowing all individuals the power to live a life of dignity and contribute to our society to the full extent of their abilities."The Infection Preventionist is responsible to plan, organize, develop, coordinate, and direct the organization wide infection prevention and control program and its activities in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations. This is a salaried, exempt position. Infection Preventionist responsibilities include:

  • Coordinates mandated infection prevention and control program activities to prevent, detect, and mitigate communicable diseases and infections within the ICFs.
  • Plans, develops, implements, evaluates, and oversees the infection prevention and control program in accordance with current regulations and guidelines governing ICFs.
  • Ensures the facility is in compliance with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and local regulations concerning infection prevention and control.
  • Monitors and ensures all ICF staff follow established infection prevention and control practices while caring for clients.
  • Establish and maintain an infection surveillance program that is based on standardized definitions of infections.
  • Establish, implement and monitor data collection tools for process and outcome surveillance.
  • Develops risk reduction strategies and implements process improvement initiatives to prevent the onset and spread of infectious diseases in ICF settings.
  • Monitors the treatment and care of clients with infectious diseases and infected wounds based on data such as lab results and in collaboration with physicians and pharmacists.
  • Establishes protocols regarding the type and duration of isolation for clients exposed to communicable diseases.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Environmental Services in developing and implementing guidelines for environmental cleaning and disinfection.
  • Assist the laundry manager in developing infection prevention and control procedures for the handling of clean and soiled laundry/linen, equipment cleaning, etc.
  • Identifies areas of deficiencies and develops plans to educate staff on proper infection control processes.
  • Review, summarize and report data relative to key infection prevention and control initiatives including healthcare acquired infections, immunization programs, and outbreaks. Develop antibiotic stewardship program and track data.
  • Conduct special investigations or outbreak investigations pertaining to new or significant trends in infections or communicable diseases.
  • Present findings from special investigations and make recommendations to the Infection Prevention and Control Committee.
  • Assist all departments in evaluating and classifying routine and job-related functions to ensure tasks involving exposure to blood/body fluids are properly identified.
  • Assist in developing and implementing waste disposal policies and procedures for infectious waste, supplies, etc.
  • Review, modify and interpret infection prevention and control policies and procedures as necessary.
  • Report all reportable diseases to the county and state health departments.
  • Participate in facility surveys/inspections made by authorized government agencies as necessary or as directed.
  • Lead the Infection Prevention and Control Committee.
  • Serve on, participate in and attend Quality Assurance Committee Meetings, and Interdisciplinary team meetings as requested or indicated.
  • Educate staff, clients and families on standard and transmission based precautions.
  • Initiate transmission based precautions for clients with communicable infections.
  • Develop and infection prevention and control orientation program for personnel and tailor the information to the clinical and educational level of the target group.
  • Provide personnel orientation/training on the facility exposure control program.
  • Work with Employee health nurse to report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials and hazardous chemicals in accordance with facilities policies and procedures.
  • Attend and participate in workshops, seminars and continuing education programs.
  • Commits to high ethical standards and complies with the Code of Conduct, state and federal regulations, accreditation standards and Verland policies and procedures. Maintains confidentiality of individual and employee records and information. Has a duty to report compliance concerns, significant legal risk questions, fraud, abuse, suspected or actual misconduct.
  • Provides direct care, as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required.Requirements:
    • Must have a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.
    • Must possess, as a minimum, a degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
    • BSN preferred
    • Must have two years of clinical experience in a hospital, nursing care facility or other related health care facility.
    • Must possess a working knowledge of epidemiology, microbiology, infectious diseases and aseptic technique to include standard and transmission-based precautions.
    • APIC Certification in infection prevention and control preferred but not necessary.
    • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently

      • Must possess time management skills, as well as the ability to prioritize.Required skills and abilities
        • Knowledge of the practices, methodologies, and techniques of infectious disease prevention and control.
        • Knowledge of disease processes and pathology and their signs and symptoms.
        • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with employees of Verland and representatives of the community.
        • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
        • Ability to organize and prioritize workload, and maintain professional demeanor at all times.
        • Ability to relate to individuals, resident care staff, nursing staff, medical staff, consultants, Director of Nursing, administrative staff, interdisciplinary team, and the community in an effective and constructive manner.
        • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
        • Knowledge of the use and functionality of Microsoft Office Suite software.
        • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, clients, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
        • Up to an extra $2,080 a year in lieu of Health Insurance coverage Physical RequirementsThis position requires the ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds or less independently, or over 50 pounds with the assistance of one other. Requires driving, sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, stooping and reaching. The ability to walk outdoors in inclement weather to administer nursing care. Ability to see, hear, speak and write.Up to 2 weeks paid training provided by Verland, to educate new hires on daily living skills, social engagement, personal hygiene skills, along with each individual's support plan/ personal development goals that are essential to improve the daily lives of the individuals that we serve.
